Inhalation therapy that cleanses sinuses and breathing cavities. Nasya includes several therapies that are designed to remove toxins and mucous from the head. The therapy starts with a gentle oil massage of head, face and chest, after which these areas are heated. This is followed by inhalation of herbal steam, pouring herbal decoction into each nostril, gargling of sea water and inhalation of the smoke of turmeric plant (Curcuma longa).
Nasya is used to treat many head related problems such as: aphonia, bronchitis, cataract, facial paralysis, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, sinusitis , migraines and catarrh.
The therapy is beneficial if performed on a regular basis, because it keeps the throat, eyes, nose and ear healthy. Nasya prevents the early graying and loss of hair, and slows down the aging process.
Medicated enema that is considered to be a central part of Ayurvedic medicine. The treatment starts with a warm oil massage in abdominal and lower back area and is followed by a proscribed type of enema.
A big enema, performed with herbal tea. Its purpose is mechanical – it eliminates impurities from the bowels. The herbs that are used are chosen according to client’s individual needs.
A small enema, performed by herbalized oils, whose purpose is oleation and nourishment. Herbs that are mixed with either sesame oil or with purified butter are chosen according to client’s individual needs.
Basti is beneficial for overall detoxification and cleansing and helps with gastrointestinal diseases; chronic constipation; common cold; heart, neck, joints and lower-back aches; as well as mental imbalance. It is also used to treat distentions, sexual disorders and hyperacidity, as well as mental disorders.
The enemas are not suitable for people suffering from shortness of breath, chronic abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, cough, diarrhea and severe anemia.
Medicated purgation therapy, designed to eliminate toxins from the sweat glands, kidneys, liver, spleen, gall bladder and gastro-intestinal tract. During the procedure, the patient is subjected to oleation by purified butter (ghee), which settles the toxins in the intestinal tract. Virechana consists of a relaxing massage of the stomach, performed with oil specifically made according to client’s needs and of drinking castor oil, traditionally used as laxative in Ayurveda.
Virechana is suitable for treating allergies, skin diseases, chronic fever, piles, gout, intestinal worms, jaundice, abdominal tumors, irritable bowel syndrome and other gastrointestinal problems. Virechana is also used to treat diabetes, asthma, goiter, migraines, elephantiasis and gynecological disorders.
Therapeutic vomiting, designed to eliminate the toxins from the respiratory tract. The therapy includes a relaxing massage of the chest and back, performed with oil specifically made according to client’s needs, that releases toxins from respiratory organs and upper digestive tract. After the massage heat is applied in order to mobilize toxins. The therapy ends with the consumption of herbal concoction that induces vomiting.
Vamana therapy is suitable for treating anemia, chronic indigestion, sinusitis, cough and cold. It is recommended to persons suffering from edema, epilepsy, lymphatic obstruction and loss of appetite. Vamana helps with tonsillitis, nausea and food poisoning, and it helps with certain symptoms of asthma.
Blood letting, performed to eliminate the toxins from the bloodstream. The therapy is traditionally performed using leeches, but it can also be done by modern techniques.
Raktamokshana is performed to treat a number of skin diseases, such as urticaria, rash, eczema, scabies and leucoderma. It also helps with abscess, acnes, gout, hemochromatosis, herpes and enlarged liver and spleen.
People suffering from anemia, edema and weakness or those who are too young or too old should not undergo this therapy.
